About Short Interest Data
Short volume represents the number of shares sold short as a percentage of total daily volume, reported by FINRA. It is not the same as short interest (total outstanding short positions), but serves as a real-time proxy.
- Short %: Short volume / total volume x 100. Values above 40% are considered elevated.
- 20-Day Avg: Average short % over the past 20 trading days — establishes a baseline.
- Change: Today short % minus the 20-day average. Positive = shorts increasing, negative = shorts covering.
- Squeeze Candidates: Stocks where short % is dropping significantly — shorts may be covering, which can accelerate price gains.
